Position Summary:

The University Information Technology Services (UITS) is seeking a talented and innovative IT professional to help support the University strive towards its goals of excellence.  UITS is a department of the President’s Office located in Shrewsbury with responsibility to provide central IT development and administrative services to the UMass campuses and President’s Office.

UITS is currently seeking a Applications Developer II to provide development support for Web Applications as well as assisting with making existing applications mobile friendly user responsive design.

Essential Functions:

  • Primary support of assigned applications and interfaces
    • Create user interfaces, framework components, database queries and back-end scripts to support full-featured and styled web applications and portals
    • Add functionality to existing applications, frameworks, queries and scripts 
    • Investigate and repair problems in existing code
    • Offer UI design input for page styling, layout, and usability
    • Ability to work independently to solve production issues and analyze/design potential solutions
    • Ability to create and execute unit test scenarios.
    • Stay informed on emerging technologies and transfer knowledge to the team members.
    • Work within a team environment as well as self-directed on single person projects. 
    • Accept accountability and ownership of tasks assigned
    • Strong communication skills needed to communicate professionally and effectively with constituents, vendors and colleagues – through email, conference calls and in person meetings.
    • Ability to apply new ideas and technologies to meet an ever-evolving user function
    • Able to transition back and forth between activities effectively. 
    • Highly motivated and able to work effectively under minimal supervision.
    • Ability to develop complex programs, screens, reports and other software objects in accordance with detailed specifications and in accordance with development standards.

Other Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Work on a team with other Application Developers and Specialists that support the Campuses and other integrations as needed.
  • Work closely with technical and functional resources, reporting, integration IT teams and campus customers.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in information systems or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Solid experience with Java/web and object oriented programming
  • 2+ years of experience in an IT office with demonstrated progressive experience in supporting departmental applications.
  • A solid understanding of software development process fundamentals
  • A strong, self-motivated desire to learn new programming languages, tools, frameworks, and techniques
  • Experience with basic web technologies including HTML, CSS, XML, SOAP, WSDL, REST, JSON, and JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of a version control system.
  • Familiarity with at least one Relational Database Management System (Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills needed to communicate professionally and effectively with constituents, vendors and colleagues – through email, conference calls and in person meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with web application technologies, such as Apache Tomcat, etc.
  • Knowledge of Agile Development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems (Mac OSX, Windows, LINUX, etc.).
  • Ability to apply new ideas and technologies to meet an ever-evolving user function
  • Able to transition back and forth between activities effectively. 
  • Highly motivated and able to work effectively under minimal supervision.
  • 2 years of experience administering Salesforce
  • Experience with RESTful APIs and data integration platforms
  • Familiarity with web application technologies, such as Apache Tomcat, etc.
  • Knowledge of Agile Development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems (Mac OSX, Windows, LINUX, etc.).
  • Ability to apply new ideas and technologies to meet an ever-evolving user function
  • Able to transition back and forth between activities effectively. 
  • Ability to continuously learn new capabilities and apply new ideas and technologies to meet evolving needs
  • Highly accountable and able to work effectively under minimal supervision.

Working Conditions:

Office Environment.  Occasional, non-standard scheduled work hours, such as evenings or weekends may be required. Required to be On-call approx. once every 5 weeks. Occasional day trips to the campuses. Potential for one day a week remote work in line with the Telecommuting Policy.

Additional Information:

Salary up to $80,000.00
