Responsibilities:

University Treasurer’s Office Tax Internship is available to currently enrolled UMass Students for the Summer 2024 at $17.00 an hour. Interns may work up to 20 hours per week during the semesters and up to 40 hours in the summer.  Interns are given a wide variety of diversified tax and business-related assignments under the direct supervision of other tax professionals.

The Tax Intern is responsible for preparing tax returns including the preparation of supporting work papers for various activities of the University.  The intern will also research and consult on various tax projects, respond to inquiries, utilize tax-related software to prepare and process returns, and carry out other projects as assigned.

This person will contribute to a collaborative teamwork atmosphere, through working effectively as a team member; understanding personal and team roles; contributing to a positive working environment by building solid relationships with team members; proactively seeking guidance, clarification and feedback.

Procedures vary with the nature of the engagement. Procedures may range from computer input to taking a tax project from start to finish including the research to support the project conclusions.  

Specifically, the intern is expected to inform the senior staff promptly of problems or tax issues encountered, provide explanations, and research tax issues. The intern will work closely with staff and managers on many of the projects.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):

Current UMass student who is enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program of study:

  • A Bachelor’s degree program in economics or business
  • A Master’s degree program with an emphasis in economics, business or accounting
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must be well organized, detailed oriented, and possess good follow-up skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when interacting with staff
  • GPA 3.0 or higher.
