Essential Functions:
- Work with campus provost offices to perform, the President’s office review of annual tenure and promotion files for compliance with relevant Trustee policies.
- Ensure campuses follow both Trustee guidelines as well as campus standards.
- Prepare recommendations for the award of tenure/promotion to be forwarded to the Trustees for their approval
- Keep track of the Periodic Multi-Year Review cycle for all tenured faculty on the campuses and annually prepare a summary report on that year’s reviews for the President and the Trustees.
- Be familiar with new academic program approval processes and changes thereto (both at the Trustee level as well as at the Board on Higher Education) and assist campuses with such approvals. Conduct the President’s level review of such programs as requited by Trustee policies.
- Periodically convene the Chief Research Officers’ Council (consisting of campus Chief Research Officers and other relevant representatives) to identify common challenges and opportunities for the growth of research and technology transfer activities across the system.
- Represent AASAE in important committees such as Conflict-of-Interest management
- Monitor compliance with quality assurance reviews such as AQAD
- Oversee seed grant and other R&D promotional programs sponsored by the President
- Represent, as required, the President’s Office in state and national governmental and quasi-governmental bodies which set policies and/or award funding.Coordinate inter-campus course exchange and other cross-campus academic collaborations.
Other Functions/Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in an academic discipline
- 10+ years in a tenured faculty role, preferably with direct experience in teaching and grant-funded research
- 5+ years of executive experience at the level of Associate Dean or Dean of an academic college within a major research university including experience in conducting tenure/promotion reviews of faculty
- Experience with research funding agencies
- Excellent communication skills and experience presenting findings to decision-makers
- Ability to collaborate with internal and external audiences, work effectively and independently on multiple priorities with clear deadlines
- Experience working with government, for-profit, non-profit, and education sector professionals
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion
- Broad experience in matters pertaining to faculty development and research promotion at the level of Associate Dean or Dean of a major research university.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Rank of full professor preferred

The incumbent will work collaboratively with the faculty affairs officers as well as the Chief Research Officers of the five campuses in carrying out your duties. The AVP will also work with the Office of General Counsel. Ultimately, the incumbent will assist the University of Massachusetts system (all five campuses and the president’s office) in all aspects of its mission, policies, and practices with the goal of serving equitably all segments of its public. |
