Assistant Professor - English and Communication

The Department of English & Communication at UMass Dartmouth seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mass Communication to begin September 1, 2026. We seek an expert in Mass Communication to teach in our B.A. in Communication and M.A. in Professional Writing & Communication programs, which are grounded in rhetorical studies and focus on journalism, technical communication, digital/multimodal communication, and strategic communication.

Successful candidates will demonstrate ways curriculum and research will expand opportunities and experiences for our diverse students.

Duties: The successful candidate will teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students in our BA in Communication and M.A. in Professional Writing & Communication programs; publish research in area; and contribute service to the university or the public. The successful candidate will teach and develop courses in Mass Communication as well as in a secondary area of expertise. The successful candidate will teach at least one course per semester in the University Studies program (e.g. Science Communication, Business Communication, Technical Communication). This position has a 3/3 course-load.

Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication or closely related field, with a specialization in Mass Communication. Ph.D. must be conferred by September 1, 2026.

Demonstrated research trajectory in Mass Communication. Experience teaching Communication in area at the university level.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated success teaching in area at the university level. Success publishing research in area. Preferred secondary areas might include: artificial intelligence (broadly construed), sports communication, mass media law, digital/media production, international/intercultural communication, broadcast communication, or media literacy.

SALARY: $73,000.00-$78,000
