SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: This position supports the research and development of projects related to the interactions between offshore fisheries and wind farms. This includes, but is not limit to, conducting trawl surveys on board fishing vessels, using optical and acoustic methods to assess the behavior and distribution of fish around wind farm turbines or similar structures. Additionally, the candidate will develop novel observational and analytical methods to evaluate the impact of wind farm on fish, fisheries and ecosystem. The applicant must be able to perform duties on fishing and/or research vessels for up to 10 days at sea. The candidate will act as lead field scientist for field research related to trawl surveys and optical/acoustic monitoring. The successful candidate will be expected to act as a major research scientist managing related projects and supervise research assistants, graduate and undergraduate students, and temporary staff while conducting work in the field and in the lab. The candidate will develop and prepare research proposals, write project reports, and prepare manuscript for publication. This position involves interacting with fishers, offshore wind farm industry, funding agencies and collaborators.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead field work on trawl surveys
- Lead field work on underwater observations using acoustic and optical instrument
- Operate AUVs or similar autonomous instruments
- Conduct laboratory experiments on fish behavior
- Care and maintain research instruments
- Write and submit proposals for external funding
- Administer grant funded research including budgeting, purchasing and reporting
- Provide training on research techniques, methods and equipment
- Analyze data, maintain records and/or laboratory/field notebooks
- Interact with industry, government laboratories or agencies
- Present work at conferences, seminars, workshops and program reviews
- Comply with all safety standards
- Perform other duties as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION: PhD in Marine Science, preferably in fisheries sciences.
- EXPERIENCE: At-sea research experience. Hands on experience in an area related to the research activity; ability to perform duties independently; judgment and action skills required to solve commonly encountered problems.
- OTHER: Record of presentations at scientific meetings and grant preparation
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD. with research experience in a field closely related to the work of the supervising faculty member.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Ability to perform duties effectively on board fishing/research vessels
- Good oral communication and writing skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to effectively supervise junior research staff
- Ability to originate ideas for new areas of research
- Ability to design, operate, calibrate and maintain relevant research instruments
- Ability to quickly understand new ideas, techniques and procedures
- Significant knowledge of the research area under study
- Proven ability in data collection, analysis and graphical presentation
- Ability to support the supervisor in all aspects of research
- Ability to write publishable manuscripts
- Ability to write research reports for submission to funding agencies
- Ability to write grant proposals
- Ability to prepare and deliver high quality research presentations
- Specific research skills determined by the supervising faculty member
SALARY: $60,000 - $65,000
