Position Summary:

The University Information Technology Services (UITS) department of the University of Massachusetts is seeking an experienced Quality/Software Support Engineer who wants to become part of an dynamic team of technology professionals supporting the institution's mission, “To enable UMASS to provide an affordable and accessible education of high quality and to conduct programs of research and public service that advance knowledge and improve the lives of the people of the Commonwealth, the nation and the world.”

Essential Functions:

The Quality/Software Support Engineer is a technical and functional role supporting our development and applications environment.  The role ensures we can deliver and support a variety of high quality, well-tested enterprise and business applications, mobile apps, and API’s. In addition to testing responsibilities, this position may also require software administration support for some 3rd Party applications.

LEVEL 3 – Performs job functions with minimal supervision

Works with:

  • Small to medium-sized agile project and operations teams
  • Automated testing tools
  • Development teams to devise test scripts
  • Application teams to help create test scripts
  • Analytics software to track quality assurance metrics

Typical Activities:

  • Create detailed test plans and assist with test cases
  • Partner with development and application teams to identify system requirements and technical design documents.
  • Estimate, prioritize and coordinate testing activities
  • Collaborate with end users, vendors and management to ensure the delivery and use of application is consistent with business outcomes
  • Perform regression testing and debugging directly
  • Analyze and document test results and create detailed defect reports to track bugs
  • Promote adoption of QA best practices. Lead process improvement and measurement
  • Devise test strategies to cover requirements, develop high-level test scenarios that implement the strategy, and elaborate scenarios into detailed test cases
  • Provide Software Administration support for some 3rd party applications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical, scientific or engineering discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to think clearly and take best course of action in high-pressure situations
  • Understanding of coding languages (Java, Python, and XML for example)

Five years of experience:

  • Testing tools such as Rational functional testing, PeopleSoft Test Framework, Test Studio, Selenium, and Katalon Studio
  • Linux and windows operating systems
  • Software development
  • QA methodologies and processes
  • Expert knowledge of writing technical documentation/defects and issues
  • Proficient in writing comprehensive test plans and maintaining/owning test cases
  • Software Administration skills (installs, configuration, Linux scripting, upgrades, monitoring)

Three years of experience:

  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment
  • Hands on experience with cross-device/Cross browser compatibility testing of mobile/web applications
  • Strong understanding of web and mobile paradigms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, Elastic Container Service)
  • Automation experience using tools like Cloud formation, Python, Ansible, and Jenkins
  • Experience with performance and/or security testing
  • Hands on experience with white box and  black box testing
  • Knowledge of SQL
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft applications
  • Knowledge of People Test Framework Testing Tool
  • Ability to keep current with new testing tools and test strategies to embrace a culture of continuous learning
  • Experience with source control systems such as GitHub
  • Experience with DevOps practices and technologies

Additional information:

Salary will be commensurate with experience up to $120,000.00
