Normal Work Schedule:
This is a part-time hourly position ranging up to 20 hours per week with variations in weekly schedule depending on project need.
The University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute’s Economic and Public Policy Research group (EPPR) conducts a range of customized economic and demographic data analysis and policy studies on topics of interest to policymakers in government, business, and academia. Workforce, housing, infrastructure, local and regional economic development, industry ecosystems, demographic and socioeconomic trends, and economic impact analyses are frequent but not exclusive themes of EPPR’s policy-related work.
Research Associates conduct specialized economic and public policy research through quantitative data analysis, literature reviews, surveys, and interviews. Depending upon the qualifications of the Research Associate, the position will entail significant writing duties and independent task management. Typically, Research Associates work collaboratively under the direction of a Research Manager, Senior Research Manager, and/or the EPPR Director.
Research Associates are expected to conduct the following work and have advanced knowledge, proven expertise, and proficiency in the following:
- Conduct data analysis with office software, expertise in specialized software such as STATA, SPSS, or ArcView GIS;
- Identify and utilize public data sources from a wide range of Federal, State and Local data providers, including the U.S. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as well as private data providers to extensively analyze social, economic, and demographic conditions;
- Prepare charts and tables, maps, memoranda, and write sections of reports;
- Apply specialized quantitative research methods to analyze economic and public policy conditions using a variety of relevant, academically sound methodologies;
- Conduct qualitative research, including field research, interviews, surveys, focus groups, and literature reviews relevant to project subjects and themes;
- Share expertise with colleagues within the unit;
- Assist student research assistants, and other staff, as necessary and directed by supervising manager;
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, sociology, public policy, planning, or a related discipline;
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, and engage in collaborative research in a team setting;
- Demonstrated knowledge of professional office software and specialized analytical software.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Master’s degree in economics, public policy, planning or a related discipline;
- Three plus years of relevant experience;
- Advanced experience with STATA, SPSS, R or a similar statistical software package, ArcGIS software, and/or related social science analytical software.
- Conduct work in an office-based, collegial environment allowing regular communication with supervising managers.
- Multiple hours in stationary position and using office equipment and computers.
- This role requires strong attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, a respect for confidentiality requirements, high levels of accuracy and organization.
- Environment is a busy, collegial office area resulting in multiple interruptions and requests for assistance.
