The President’s Office at University of Massachusetts is seeking a Compensation Specialist who will lead the development of a compensation strategy and implementation of a compensation policy across the university’s five campuses.

The Compensation Specialist will provide consultative analysis on job design, organizational design, classification of positions, and the administration of compensation and reward practices and procedures to the UMass President’s Office and other members of the UMass leadership as requested. The incumbent will manage all functions of employee compensation and serve as compensation liaison to campus HR partners by responding to questions on compensation objectives, policies and procedures. The Compensation Specialist also advises senior management concerning campus job/salary evaluations for highly-compensated non-unit professional staff.
- Assists in the development, implementation, and administration of all President’s Office compensation plans and programs and overall extrinsic reward strategies to support institutional priorities.
- Conducts periodic market comparisons, including the use of relevant salary surveys, to ensure competitive salaries; evaluates jobs to determine classification, grade, FLSA status, and salary.
- Conducts position audits, including desk audits, interviews, and focus group discussions as necessary to collect and organize job information for evaluation.
- Advises department managers in organizational structures and maintains job descriptions and salary grades for all President’s Office staff/positions.
- Assists in implementing periodic merit pay programs for President’s Office staff.
- Manages President’s Office Position Control process (with Assistant Director for HRIS).
- Reviews and advises senior management concerning campus job/salary evaluations for highly-compensated non-unit professional staff.
- Works closely with the Deputy Chief Human Resources Officer to ensure compliance with the Massachusetts Equal Pay Act and other federal and state compensation laws and regulations.
- Works closely with hiring managers to develop and implement recruiting strategies—consistent with Affirmative Acton responsibilities—to fill vacancies in the President’s Office.
- Develops and implements strategies to attract qualified candidates from diverse populations, including women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
- Assists hiring managers in screening and selecting candidates, including (through a consumer reporting agency) conducting background reviews of all final candidates for employment.
- Assists hiring managers in developing total reward packages to guide negotiations with selected candidates.
- Assists hiring managers in drafting and issuing offer letters to selected candidates.
- Assists in the preparation of annual Affirmative Action Plans and Pay Equity Analyses as needed.
- May assist in the development of overall compensation strategies in collective bargaining.
- May coordinate or serve on system wide committees in areas of responsibility.
- May draft Requests for Proposals for the procurement of goods and services within areas of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary practices concepts, principles, and procedures in compensation systems.
- Familiarity with Affirmative Action principles and responsibilities.
- Excellent presentation skills; proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite; excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated data analysis analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
- High ethical standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
- 3-5 years’ progressively responsible related experience.

- Demonstrated knowledge of staffing strategies to attract diverse populations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Affirmative Action principles and responsibilities.
- Experience working in an institution of higher education.
- Experience working in a union environment.
- Demonstrated experience in project management, policy/procedure development and implementation, and data analysis.
- General work in an office environment; may require travel to Boston or one or more campuses.
- May require periodic extended hours, nights and weekends, as necessary.
- This is a full time benefited position
- The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000
